St. Stephen's Episcopal Church has been committed to the education of children since 1870, when it opened St. Stephen's School to fill a gap in educational resources before the public school system could meet that need. The St. Stephen's Preschool opened in 1998 and has been providing quality affordable childcare for children in Millburn Township and neighboring communities ever since.
St. Stephen's Preschool provides a warm, loving, and nurturing environment for children ages four months through six years. Our students come from diverse religious, racial, and ethnic backgrounds, as do our faculty and staff. Although a ministry of the parish, we do not teach religion, instead we focus on teaching respect and dignity of all people. Children are encouraged to celebrate their own talents and differences, as well as those of others. They receive guidance to develop a solid foundation with which to interact in the community and the world, with developmentally appropriate challenges and encouragement.
The program is structured to promote all aspects of the child's well being and competence. Children learn through play and other activities. Teachers use the environment, materials, and teaching strategies to engage and enable each child to acquire important knowledge and skills.
Our goal is to get to know your child well and to use this knowledge to help facilitate their learning experience. We believe that all teaching requires ongoing professional development, personal reflection, and collaboration. We value parent involvement at every level and see parents as partners in our work to nurture each child's natural curiosity and love of learning.
Located in the education building of St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, the Preschool has eight classrooms, an indoor gym, an outside play area, and the front lawn and driveway, which is transformed into one of the children's favorite spaces - a track for the fleet of bright yellow trikes that are the highlight of many days.
We offer full-time programs, five days a week for Infants (4 to 18 months), Toddler (18-30 months), PreK-2, PreK-3, PreK-4, and Kindergarten students. There is specific attention to the developmental and learning needs of each group. Our hours are:
